Speaking of material, console tables come in some of the most varied choices of any type of table. The majority, of course, are wood: oak, maple, walnut and cherry are popular, although the material can be stained or distressed to change the look of the piece. Glass tabletops mixed with wood bases are an attractive way to add dimension and variety to the design, and are also helpful for intermingling styles within a room. Glass is also uniquely suited to reflecting candlelight or enhancing the sparkle of your glassware.
Depending on what you are looking for you can find console tables to fit just about any décor. If you want something artsy, you can probably find a design in your favorite art period. If you want something more traditional, you will find ones to fit your needs.
The complexity of your table is also something you're going to have to consider. Some console tables are as simple as 4 small legs and a table. This is fine as long as it doesn't look too simple for the area you plan on putting it in, but if everything else in the room is larger and more complex, you'll want to go with something that matches. More complex tables offer neatly-designed backs, taller legs and other features.
